When The 10 Smartest Decisions
a Woman Can Make Before 40 was published in Spanish, the Spanish publisher, Pearson Educacion, sponsored book tours for me in Mexico (5 cities, plus the International Book Fair for a week in Guadalajara) Columbia (3 cities) and Costa Rica. It was wonderful beyond my wildest dreams. Imagine: press conferences in each city, with 30-40 members of the press, TV and radio. 5-8 radio and TV shows per day. Speaking to an audience of 1000 women at the "Workshop 2000" in Mexico City on 10/27, and another 500 young women at the University in Monterrey. I was mobbed at several book signings, with long, long lines. Truly a writer's dream, even through a translator!!! The Mexican people are so warm and welcoming, and the women are hungry for information. The women and I laughed, cried, talked, hugged, kissed and had a wonderful time together. I paid for nothing, was put up in grand hotels, and they even paid for Richard to travel with me!! My editors and translators took great care of me, touring me around the cities, and seeing to my every comfort. Several of them became my friends. The funniest moment was when I was to appear on TV Azteca, in Mexico City -- the biggest national channel. The show was like our "Today" show (called "Consello De Mujer"--"The Stamp of a Woman" -- meaning women's style) While we were waiting to go on, we were watching the taping, and they had a poor unhappy kangaroo, in a harness, who had chafed herself against the leash, trying to get loose. It was a sad sight. The kangaroo was pooping all over the floor, and during the segment, the gorgeous TV personality tried to feed the kangaroo biscuits (Purina kangaroo chow?). But it was not cooperating. So, when I got onto the set, and was being miked, and the same woman said to me that she was excited about my book, and thought we would have a great segment, I said "I'll probably be easier than the kangaroo." I thought she was going to fall off the couch, she laughed so hard, and she almost didn't get herself back together before the camera came on. A very fun moment.
