As Oprah would say, my "aha" moment
by
Cynthia Polansky
I was presenting my based-on-true-story-of-Holocaust-survivor
novel "Far Above Rubies" for about 60 members of Hadassah, a Jewish women's organization. At the end, a high school student told me that she had seen an ad for the event and thought my book sounded wonderful. She gave me a folded paper crane, explaining that this universal symbol of peace was appropriate to my novel's tale of courage and survival. I was so touched that I told her I would keep the crane by me at every book signing I did thereafter. I realized that, if my book could entice a teenager away from her cell phone and computer for an evening, I have done my job well.
