Tom Grace is the bestselling
author of the Nolan Kilkenny series of adventure novels, and an architect in private practice. The Kilkenny novels feature Grace’s signature character, an ex-Navy Seal with strong ties to the Catholic Church. Grace was born and raised in Southeastern Michigan. He attended parochial schools and is a graduate of Detroit Catholic Central High School. Grace later attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he received two degrees in architecture. While in graduate school, an instructor in design theory noted that a paper Grace wrote was the finest he’d ever received for that course, and encouraged Grace to pursue a career in architectural writing. At the time, Grace’s professional aspirations leaned more toward Frank Lloyd Wright than Ada Louise Huxtable, but the seed for writing was planted. In constructing his novels, Grace draws upon his intensely detail-oriented skills honed in the practice of architecture, in which he designs projects ranging from private residences to cutting-edge research facilities. As an architect, Grace has worked on a wide variety of design projects, including the modernization of the science facilities at Marygrove College in Detroit, and the renovation of a nuclear engineering facility for alternative energy research. He also designed the world’s first Human Applications Laboratory for Gene Therapy for the University of Michigan Medical Center. As both an author and architect, Grace lives by Mies van der Rohe’s famous aphorism: God is in the details. Painstaking research underpins each of his novels, creating the factual foundations that support the stories. Grace’s first Nolan Kilkenny novel, Spyder Web, was published in 1999. It was followed by Quantum (2000), Twisted Web (2003), Bird of Prey (2004), and The Secret Cardinal (2007). Tom Grace resides in Michigan with his wife, five children, and a yellow Labrador in a modernist, energy efficient home of his own design. For more information visit www.tomgrace.net.
